Teen Activists are Persistent
One day, in Pakistan, Malala and her friends were riding home after school. Suddenly, an armed man arrived in their school bus and began yelling, asking who Malala was. Eventually, he found her and shot her. The bullet smashed through her head, and went through her neck and then to her shoulder. She was in extreme conditions but she managed to survive. The bullet luckily didn’t manage to go through her brain. She was sent to a hospital that specialized in military injuries, hoping for her to get better. She didn’t leave until January, 2013 when she was joined by her family.
Why did this happen?
The Taliban is a fundamental Muslim movement who are currently waging war within their country. Malala’s dad was an outspoken opponent to them because he ran a girls school (with SWAT) across of his home. The Taliban are trying to keep education away from girls for various reasons and have banned schools with girls.
As the Taliban’s hold on Swat got bigger, Malala started to write a blog. It was under a fake name, because she was talking about her growing fears that her school would be under attack, and about the military increase in SWAT. Listening to music, watching television, and shopping were then banned from a female’s life. After that Malala’s dad was told that his school, had to close. Even after being threatened, Malala and his dad refused. They continued to represent the importance of education.
As a result, the Taliban shot Malala and yet she survives.
Later, she continues to stand up for education of girls. She demonstrates persistence because first, she wouldn't listen to the continuous threats and then, (after she was shot) she still was working to teach other females.
In 2011, she received Pakistan's first National Youth Peace Prize and was nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize.
